From the Stars, Knowledge
Through Starfleet, the Federation has met every challenge with bravery and thoughtfulness. Here’s how we achieved our positive future together:
The 21st Century was a time of trials on Earth where a momentous event changed everything: humanity developed their first warp drive, allowing them to travel through space faster than the speed of light.
Through this development, humans made first contact with a new species, the Vulcans, upending everything we thought we knew about the universe and ourselves. The Vulcans taught humans the value of ‘Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations’ – the idea that growth and progress happens when diverse perspectives come together.
The United Federation of Planets was founded on Earth in San Francisco in 2161, after humans made first contact with the Vulcans. This interstellar republic of planetary governments works together to protect the fundamental rights, dignity, and worth of all lifeforms.
Predating the Federation, Starfleet is assigned to the exploration of space and the resulting scientific, diplomatic, and defensive duties. The interplanetary agency utilizes a vast fleet of starships (the home of captains and their crew) and starbases for their various endeavors involving trade, exploration, science, humanitarian aid, and defense.
In the centuries since, Starfleet crews have forged ties with allies across the universe and have made scientific discoveries that could have been impossible on Earth.
Starfleet’s most important principle is “General Order 1” or “The Prime Directive,” which says that Starfleet cannot interfere with the development of a culture that is living and growing. Starfleet officers take this principle very seriously. They aren’t allowed to violate it, even to save their lives or to save their ship.
How do they get around?
On badass ships.
