When Starfleet assigned Ben Sisko to oversee Deep Space 9, he wasn't sure how long he'd stick around. He went on to play a leading role in defending both Bajor and the Federation against forces from the Gamma quadrant.

With a career spanning seven decades, Jean-Luc Picard is one of Starfleet’s most decorated and celebrated officers. Picard’s legacy was cemented when he took command in 2364 of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D. He served as master of that vessel and its successor for 17 years before being promoted to admiral in 2381 and given a special assignment to assist the Romulan people during their time of great crisis. Picard retired from Starfleet in 2385.

Michael Burnham was left orphaned after her parents were killed during a Klingon attack on Doctari Alpha. Burnham was then brought to Vulcan to live with Sarek, his human wife Amanda Grayson and their son, Spock. Despite the loss, Burnham quickly adapted to Vulcan logic disciplines and became an outstanding student at the Vulcan Science Academy and accepting a commission in Starfleet upon her graduation.

Captain James T. Kirk grew up in Iowa, on Earth. The youngest officer to achieve the rank of captain, Kirk has achieved notoriety for his cunning, resourcefulness and his refusal to accept defeat. He is one of Starfleet's most highly decorated officers, though his willingness to step outside the strict nature of regulations has created some friction for him within Starfleet. He also has quite a reputation as a lady's man.

Kathryn Janeway's first assignment as captain of the U.S.S. Voyager was to capture the crew of a renegade Maquis vessel. While in pursuit, both Janeway's ship and that of the Maquis were swept into the distant Delta quadrant by powerful alien technology. Stranded 70,000 light-years from Earth, Janeway convinced the Maquis to join her Starfleet crew and serve together during the long voyage home. The daughter of a Starfleet admiral, Janeway is a skilled science officer. She has a deep passion for fresh-brewed coffee.

The first Vulcan to attend Starfleet Academy, Spock is regarded as the finest first officer in the fleet. His father is a Vulcan ambassador, his mother a schoolteacher from Earth. Spock's Vulcan nature is constantly at war with his human side. Because he was never able to fit in on either Vulcan or Earth, Spock considers Starfleet his true home. He is intensely loyal to Captain Kirk.

In the alternate “Mirror Universe” where humanity embraced moving to the stars with iron-fisted imperialism, Philippa Georgiou is the Emperor of the Terran Empire. Her adopted daughter is Michael Burnham, who she believed dead until the crew of the Discovery found themselves in this off-kilter reality.

Commander Will Riker served as then-Captain Jean- Luc Picard’s first officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise for 15 years. Nicknamed “Number One” by Picard, Riker turned down multiple opportunities to ascend to the command of his own ship, recognizing how much there was to learn from Picard aboard the Enterprise. Riker eventually left to command the U.S.S. Titan after marrying his longtime shipmate and Imzadi (“beloved”), Deanna Troi.

Although he is an android, Starfleet has determined that Data is a sentient life-form entitled to full civil rights. He was created by the eccentric scientist Noonien Soong, who was not able to provide him with the ability to feel human emotions. Nevertheless, Data is fascinated by them and despite the numerous advantages he has as an android, his driving goal is to become more human. Humanoid in appearance, Data has pale golden skin and yellow eyes and is much stronger than his fellow crewmembers.

Jonathan Archer has dreamed of traveling to the stars since he was a boy–dreams that were encouraged by his father, who helped develop the warp 5 engine that has made the Enterprise’s journey possible. Archer originally approached his mission with a sense of wonder and more than a little naiveté. He’s tougher now, having learned some very hard lessons along his path to the stars.

When the Vulcans tried to get Starfleet to delay the Enterprise’s maiden voyage, Starfleet overruled the decision. Starfleet reluctantly agreed to have a Vulcan officer "oversee" the humans' progress but allowed T’Pol to became a member of the crew, though she wasn’t any happier about her assignment. However, she quickly came to respect them, particularly Captain Archer. After several years together she realized her loyalties had subtly shifted and she officially joined Starfleet.

Worf was the first Klingon to attend Starfleet Academy. He is deeply proud of his Klingon heritage, but is viewed as an outsider by many Klingons. In addition to his time aboard the Enterprise, Worf ultimately went on to serve with distinction on space station Deep Space 9.

At the age of six in 2356, Annika Hansen along with her parents was captured and assimilated by the Borg and assigned the formal designation “Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01.” Seven was liberated from the Collective by the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager. Over the course of the next four years, Seven worked to regain her humanity and individuality, remaining with Voyager until its return to the Alpha Quadrant in 2378. Seven joined the Fenris Rangers, an independent group of peacekeepers who try to maintain a semblance of law and order on both sides of the former Neutral Zone.

Uhura's name means "freedom" in Swahili, her native tongue. A highly skilled communications officer, Uhura has proven herself an indispensable member of the Enterprise crew on numerous occasions. Uhura also has a beautiful voice, and she often entertains her fellow crew members by singing during her off-duty hours.

Bashir was born with severe learning disabilities. To compensate, his parents put him through illegal genetic enhancement therapy, which the Doctor kept secret for many years. Bashir requested his posting on Deep Space 9 because he wanted to experience "the excitement of the frontier."

Saru is a Kelpien and the only member of his species in Starfleet. Kelpiens are a prey species on his homeworld of Kaminar. Saru is incredibly bright, dedicated and kind, but as a member of a prey species, he is governed by his heightened fear instincts, which he fights daily in order to fulfill his duties as an officer.

Formerly Admiral Picard’s first officer during his mission to help the Romulans, Raffi Musiker is also a veteran Starfleet Intelligence agent and formidable tactician. Her experience investigating and analyzing Romulan affairs was a vital asset to Picard as he navigated all manner of diplomatic obstacles while working to evacuate Romulans and others from the predicted effects of a Romulan supernova. Over the course of this assignment, Musiker became a close friend and confidant to Picard. When the admiral retired in 2385 she returned to Starfleet Intelligence, but eventually left the service.

Odo is a Founder, one of a species of shape-shifters who live in the Gamma quadrant. As an infant, the Founders sent Odo into space to encounter other species and eventually return to his home world with information about his travels. 

Jadzia Dax is a joined Trill, one of a small segment of the humanoid Trill populace that has a symbiotic relationship with a sentient life form that inhabits its body.

Born in Georgia, on Earth, McCoy is a highly skilled physician and an astute judge of human nature. Kirk calls him as "Bones," an affectionate reference to the days when doctors were called "sawbones." Crusty and outspoken, McCoy is soft and compassionate underneath. Together, he, Spock and Kirk create the classic triumvirate that is the heart of the Enterprise crew; McCoy's highly passionate emotions balance Kirk's gutsy command style and Spock's dependency on intellect and discipline.

Tilly joins the crew of Discovery as a Starfleet Academy trainee when the Federation-Klingon war breaks out in 2255. Tilly is a brilliant engineer with aspirations for command and plans to one day captain her own ship. While much loved by those who know her, Tilly is very open with her thoughts and feelings and expresses them freely.

Neelix, a native of the planet Talax, joined the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager shortly after the ship arrived in the Delta quadrant. He has extensive knowledge regarding the life forms and foodstuffs the crew is likely to encounter within the quadrant, and, accordingly, acts as both the ship's guide and chef.

Commander Tucker is a Southern from Florida and among the most experienced engineers in Starfleet, particularly when it comes to understanding and maintaining Starfleet’s revolutionary new warp 5 engine.

Picard’s beloved pit bull, named for the nickname captains often gave their first officers.

Quark is the owner of Quark's, a bar on DS9's Promenade. Think Rick's Place in "Casablanca." Quark is always at the heart of scheme–be it legitimate or illicit–on the station.
